A RESOURCE FOR PRACTISING ENGINEERS NAVIGATING THEIR CAREERS

This offering will be of interest to engineers from all disciplines (or indeed anyone) navigating their career.

As you know my passion is to help engineers be proud of and enjoy their profession, so that they stay in engineering and feel motivated to engage with people to considering a career in engineering.

We know the engineering profession can be incredibly exciting and rewarding and we also know that progression within any career can at times be challenging. You may get to a certain point in your career and may just feel stuck, that your career has plateaued; or issues can arise which stifle your creativity and productivity. You may want a change in direction, or feel you are being unfairly held back or treated differently to how you feel you should be treated.

If a blockage in your career is allowed to fester, it can spill into frustration and ultimately dis-enchantment, which can cause people to leave the profession, throwing away years invested, and untapped future opportunities. How do you navigate out of these, seemingly, stuck positions?

I am excited to introduce Giovanna Caracciolo, accredited coach, mentor and founder of Evolving Mindscape, who is also a chartered engineer with circa 20 years of experience in industry; to chat with me about navigating engineering careers.

The content is roughly 20 minutes long;

Introduction

Issues – Presenting an Underlying

What can happen if these issues are left un-tackled?

What can happen if these issues are tacked?

Closing – what advice would you give to someone who feels stuck?

A Leader may struggle to know how to begin to un-stick these.

I am excited to introduce Roger Martin, co-founder of The Mindset Difference; who has worked with Leaders in the Construction industry since 2015.

The content is roughly;

Intro; Rewarding but challenging careers

Issues – Presenting an Underlying (key influencers, mind-sets)

Self-talk; Right decisions vs right conditions; Silos and conversations needed but not had

Tiredness re change being done to people; Same old solutions

How big things get done and ‘risk dumping’; Psychological safety; Innovation; Mind-set shift

Perception of risk and the biggest mind-set shift of all; Responding to risks

Advice to Leaders

Distinguishing between what is Useful and what is Transformative

**Note** apologies in advance - this is a chat recorded over Zoom and has the usual freezes and audio glitches we have come to accept in virtual meetings.

I AM ENGINEER ….SEE ME DRAW

A great gift to yourself or to the proud to be engineers or budding engineers in your life! They’ll love the play on words of a certain song ‘I am Engineer -See Me Draw!’ …we engineers are cheesy like that ;)

This is a - handy for most bags - 6 inch by 9 inch, 100 page sketchbook; alternate blank and squared pages, changing sides half way through (for those who prefer blank or squared to be on the right).

Drawing is integral to an engineer’s profession, be it digital or by hand. Sketching problems help Engineers identify all relevant parameters to that problem. They also test their solution through sketches to demonstrate to themselves that their solution resolves all the parameters to the problem. Finally, they use sketches to communicate their solution in as a concise and complete way as possible so the final drawings for manufacture or construction can be produced.

Or it’s great for doodling, capturing some detail or plain having fun!
